For
most of the four wheel drive enthusiasts, this is a great time
of the year as the wet season is certainly over and the Cape
York region is ready to be explored and fished again for another
year.
For
most people, Lakefield National Park is normally the first trip
on the agenda to spend a weekend camping and fishing the numerous
waterholes for Barramundi.
Although
Lakefield National Park is not fully open due to the wet season,
some of the camping spots around the New Laura ranger station
opened to the public about two weeks ago.
Approximately
five to six hours drive from Cairns, Kennedy Bend is probably
the best place to stay for the first trip into Lakefield National
Park. The roads are in excellent condition apart from a few
sections at creek crossings. Even though this is probably the
'easiest' spot to access, Four Wheel Drive vehicles are still
recommended.
Lakefield
National Park is not only a great fishing location, the wildlife
and scenery attracts campers from all over the world.
Locally
around Cairns the fishing has been fairly quite last week due
to the strong 20 knot southerly winds. There has been some good
fish caught in the Cairns Inlet and the Mulgrave and Russell
rivers. The Barramundi have been scarce with the onset of the
cooler weather, but there is still plenty of Mangrove Jacks
being caught.
