AUGUST
4th 2002
Although
there was only a short break in the weather last weekend, those
who got out on the water found the fishing quite good.
Most
of the reef fish were on the bite, including good-sized coral
trout in the deeper water around 30 metres.
The
Spanish Mackerel have been a little patchy over the past two
weeks, mainly due to the weather conditions not allowing the
chance to target them.
For those chasing Mackerel at this time of the year the best
coastal spots have definitely been Kings Point, the Franklin
Islands and the wrecks north of Double Island. Heading out from
Cairns, the channel marker leads have also been fairly consistent
for doggy mackerel over the last few months.
The
Yorkey's Knob light tackle tournament was held last weekend
which confirmed that the juvenile black marlin are definitely
worth chasing at this time of the year. Rob McCulloch, who you
may have seen working at the shop on weekends, caught three
black marlin which won him the champion male angler award. His
boat was also named champion team after finishing with four
black marlin tagged and released for the two-day comp.
Russell Heads
Although
the weather has certainly changed and is starting to warm up,
my advice for Russell Heads is to stay up in the freshwater
reaches until the water temperature has a chance to warm up
a little.
Casting
lures around the weed beds in the freshwater has definitely
been the most productive during the recent spell of cold weather.
Prawn type lures like Rio's and prawn stars work well. Soft
plastics are great around the weed as they have fewer tendencies
to foul-up with weed.
Looking
Ahead
For
anyone thinking of planning a bush trip this year they should
do so now. September is regarded as the last month of the year
to go away without the factor of rain causing any trouble. This
is totally dependant on rain conditions and trips away in December
are not uncommon, but do so at your own risk.
September
school holidays is a great time to get away to places like Lakefield
National Park which is only about a five hour drive from Cairns.
The camping is great and the Barra fishing can be equal to anywhere
found on the Cape.
For
anyone requiring information on fishing and camping spots around
the Cape, call into the shop as we have maps for most areas
and more than likely one of us would have already been there
to help you plan your next trip away.
