April
22nd, 2002
As
I sat down to write this week's report, it became all too obvious
that a whole new range of fish species are ready to be targeted
now that the cooler weather has set in.
The
fishing locally around Cairns certainly changes quite a bit
during winter with a whole new range of species, that are not
common captures during the summer months.
Many
palagic species like Queenfish, Trevally, Whiting and Pikey
Bream are more prevalent in the estuary, while Mackerel, Tuna
and Billfish will arrive with the cooler water temperatures
offshore.
Although
last year the mackerel season was a non-event, recent captures
of 'winter sized fish', around the 20-pound mark certainly make
this year look as if it will be as good as any.
High
Island, Kings Point and the channel markers off Cairns have
all been producing good numbers of 'doggy' mackerel this week,
most of which were caught first thing in the morning.
The
Franklin Islands, which is about seven nautical miles from the
mouth of Russell Heads, is well within reach of most boaties.
This is probably one of the most popular Mackerel fishing spots
south of Cairns and every year produces quality fish.
The
techniques for catching mackerel are greatly varied between
anglers but mainly consist of either floating pilchards, trolling
artificial lures, trolling rigged garfish or spinning metal
slicer lures.
There
is no answer as to what is the best technique to use, but more
depends on yourself to work with the conditions you have on
the day, looking at the tides, weather, current etc and only
then make a decision on which way to go. Remember that some
day's they just won't bite!
On
Tuesday night the 30th April, Northern Angler will be holding
a fishing workshop from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at Edmonton. The topic
for the night is on Mackerel Fishing. From different locations
on where to fish to rigging baits and terminal tackle required
will be covered. The cost is $5.00 and bookings are essential.
